Description

The breadnut or chataigne, as it is locally called in Trinidad and Tobago, is a fruit of the chestnut group. Sometimes referred to as the Maya nut, as it is theorised to be a common staple of the Mayan. The painstaking removal of the thick spiky skin gives way to a soft interior which is edible. Considered a delicacy, it is sometimes served in a coconut curry sauce while the seeds may be boiled and eaten on its own.
